TransRec – mitigating the threat of oil spills
With the goal of mechanically removing oil pollution from the harsh offshore environment, Framo developed the TransRec system: a high-capacity, multi-function tool for emergency oil spill response. TransRec is more than just an oil skimmer. It has been designed with high-recovery capacities for large oil spills in offshore environments, independent of the oil characteristics. Since 1977, over 200 TransRec systems have been delivered to ensure oil spill preparedness all around the world.
The TransRec system is equipped with sensors that allow for 24/7 operation. You can operate TransRec in the dark as well as in snow and other tough weather conditions. The system also has different skimmer heads to handle various types of oil viscosities.
Framo has several TransRec systems available for short-term or long-term rental or leasing. Skilled Framo personnel can be provided along with the system when an oil spill accident happens.
TransRec is designed for both recovery and transfer. The floating umbilical enables oil recovery vessels to safely transfer recovered oil to larger tanker ships. As a result, it is possible to increase the overall efficiency of an oil recovery operation without needing additional vessels, which saves valuable time.
The TransRec system is the result of 30 years of research and development. The work has been carried out in close cooperation with the Norwegian Clean Seas Association for Operating Companies (NOFO).
Oil spill preparedness
Between 2009 and 2013, Deep Ocean’s “Northern Commander” operated as an emergency standby vessel on the Norwegian Continental Shelf during drilling campaigns for several oil companies. On board, Northern Commander had a Framo TransRec, Weir skimmer and a HiVisc skimmer, providing the oil companies with excellent preparedness in the event of any oil spill. Framo personnel also conducted annual inspections of the equipment and held emergency drills with crew to ensure that everyone was properly trained should an accident occur.
